Start with how you use the room
Before we talk about cabinets or countertops, we want to know what bothers you about the kitchen you have. Maybe two people cannot cook at once. Maybe there is nowhere to set down groceries, or the room is cut off from the rest of the house. Those frustrations tell us more than any wish list.
We also ask who uses the kitchen and how. A family that cooks every night, a couple that entertains often, and a household that mostly reheats and gathers at the island all need different things from the same room.
Layout and flow
Layout decides whether a kitchen feels easy or awkward. We look at where the sink, range and refrigerator sit, how far you walk between them, and whether people passing through get in the way of the cook. Sometimes a better plan comes from moving a wall or a doorway. Sometimes the existing footprint works once it is arranged differently.
We review what is behind the walls, too. Plumbing, ductwork, electrical and structure all affect what can move and what should stay, and we talk through those tradeoffs with you openly.
Storage that fits your things
Good storage is planned around what you own. Pots and pans, small appliances, pantry goods, trays and recycling each have a better home in some places than others. We think through drawers, pull-outs, pantry space and where everyday items land so the counters stay clear.
Selections without the overwhelm
Cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, lighting, fixtures and appliances add up to a lot of decisions. We help you work through them in a sensible order, and we point out where a choice will matter most day to day so you can set priorities that fit your budget.
Making key selections early helps the work move along and keeps surprises to a minimum once construction starts.
Living at home during the work
Remodeling a kitchen while you live in the house takes some planning. Before work begins, we talk with you about how to set up a temporary space for meals, how we will protect the rest of the home, and which phases will be the most disruptive. Our team coordinates the trades and keeps you informed as the project moves along.
Our first meeting
We usually start by visiting your home and walking the kitchen together. We listen to what is working, what is not and what you hope the room can become. From there we can talk about next steps for design, selections and planning.
